Nutrition and Addiction - Foods and Tips that help patients reduce the cravings

Just finished up a continuing education class on addiction. People are addicted to many things in todays society and it is leading to a mental health epidemic. With so much at our fingertips instaneously it is so easy to feed our addictions. There is science behind addiction and it is not just easy to tell our body not to consume alcohol, drugs, or food anymore. Our brain has incurred damage to certain areas of the brain because of the addiction and after years of abuse there can be permanent damage. There are foods that actually help with addiction and nutrition along with therapy and possibly medications are needed to repair the damage left behind.

First of all- It is important to eat well-balanced small meals through out the day. Your sugar level and food intake is vital in cravings and if you are not regulating your mood through eating it will be surely hard to beat the addiction.

Stay Away From Refined Sugar- Sugar found in baked goods, sweets, processed foods etc.

Instead focus on bananas and berries- lots of essential vitamins

Nuts- espeically pastachio nuts

Seeds- Flax would be best

Whole Grains- Minimal-

Lots of B Vitamin rich foods- Dark Green Vegetables

Avocados and Olive Oil (not heated)

Fish-Stay local

Livers- lamb or chicken (consume once a week) (Very detoxifying)

If anyone has any questions on why these foods, I would be happy to go into detail at your appointment. Or you can email us!
