Have you noticed that lately, you are getting neck and back pain? Did you notice your posture at work, home, texting or in the car? If not take a moment and really look at yourself in the mirror. The misalignment you see is from the posture.

STOP.

Why do we have our head and neck forward? Why do we bend at mid-waist? Have you noticed that you try to straighten yourself only to go back to slouching? Why do chiropractors, physical therapists, and many others are talking about posture?

Posture refers to the body's alignment and positioning to the force of gravity while we are standing, sitting or lying down and this gravity applies a force on our joints, ligaments, and muscles.

Types of Posture

2 types: inactive and active (static and dynamic)

Inactive is adapted for resting or sleeping.

Active is when the integrated action of many muscles is required to maintain active positions.

Static - body segments are aligned and maintained in a fixed position. Examples are standing, lying, sitting and kneeling.

Dynamic- body segments are moving. Examples are walking, running, jumping, throwing and lifting.

How posture affects our spine?

Since the spine is designed around 3 basic curves that maximize the mechanical advantage for weight bearing distribution, the curves transfer the loads and distributing the stress more efficiently.

Poor posture is less resistant to the strains and stresses we experience every day of our life.

The stress of poor posture can change anatomical characteristics of the spine, breathing becomes more labored, low energy, decrease range of motion, internal health issues, prone to pain and injury and self-image misinterpreted. Since bad posture can result in poor health.

What can you do about it?

Improve your posture with chiropractic adjustments of the spine to reduce misalignment, balance-specific exercises to improve posture and balance, increase core strength and flexibility.
